Watching pornography might negatively affect your marriage

Pornography can ruin relationships. If you stop and think about it, pornography is something that most people don’t announce that they watch. This is partly because of the negative social stigma of these adult movies. When it comes to married couples, watching pornography has a special stigma. Many people think that porn can cause problems in a marriage — and a new study shows that is true.

The study, which was presented to the American Sociological Association notes that when the woman in the marriage watches porn, the marriage is three times more likely to end than in marriages in which the woman doesn’t watch porn. There is also an increased risk of divorce if the man watches porn, but the risk isn’t as great if the couple watches porn together.

Interestingly, if the woman stops watching porn, the chance of divorce is lowered. That isn’t the same for men, but men are less likely to give up porn than women so the effects might not have been noticed in the study.

While the study hasn’t passed the peer review process, it does bring up an interesting point about divorce — even watching other people in sexual acts can impact the stability of your marriage. If you are in a new marriage, are young and aren’t very religious, the chance of porn affecting your marriage is strong.

If porn has come between you and your spouse and you are ready to call it quits, you need to make sure that you think about protecting your rights in a divorce. Matters like property division, child custody, and child support are very important.
